beckyLifeYou been running through my mind

Not sure if Walters visits the porch, but perhaps our other single readers will enjoy this Post article of catcall hits and misses.

A highlight:
“Another guy said as he was passing me, ‘Hey cutie,’ then once he was behind me said, ‘I’d eat that …’ That’s moving a little too fast for me. I was like, ‘Slow down, guy with a bag full of cans. If you don’t cool it, this is not going to happen!’

My personal “favorite” catcall-ish moment? The president of a regional legal association introducing me in front of a crowd of 200 as the next speaker on the agenda (I was there to demonstrate their new website) by saying, “This is Becky. If I’d known how cute she was, I’d have found out her room number last night.”

Nice, right? That’s one reason I now have a new jobby job.

beckyEntertainmentWhy am I so tired, you ask?

John will no doubt follow with detailed lists and photos, but if you are all wondering why we’re holed up in the house watching America’s Got Talent for the next several days it’s because I’m freaking exhausted.

Why am I so tired, you ask? Here was our week of jam packed “oh my god the Alamo is closing so we must spend every waking minute there until they kick us out” events:
* Saturday the 23rd - 7 pm - 2 am - Joss Whedon Birthday extravaganza - Serenity screening (Benefit for Equality Now - awesome!), Buffy Sing-A-Long and then the finales of Angel and Buffy. I confirm that Serenity and Buffy rock, and officially deem Angel to not be worth my time. Too much testosterone, and now I know how it ends anyway.
* Sunday the 24th - 6 pm - 6 am - Half-Ass-A-Thon - mini-festival of 5 movies, open only to Butt Numb A Thon attendees. Saw a sneak of Stardust, which was quite lovely.
* Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th - mercifully, nights off
* Wednesday the 27th - 6 pm - 4 am - Big Night (with delicious 6 course feast), Earthquake (18 subwoofers creating a “real earthquake” experience, requiring that we all sign wavers and wear special hardhats), Night Warning with Susan Tyrell live in person. Speeches by Tim, Harry, Lars, Karrie and more, plus fun trailers and ads for past events throughout the evening. At 4 am, we all toasted the original Alamo (Dewars supplied shots) and then we all got to take a seat home. John and I brought ours home together, love seat style.

That’s right, kids, my a** has been in an theater seat for 36 hours in the last week. A good time, but I am officially a zombie. And (dare I say it?) tired of movies for the moment.

beckyEntertainmentRemembering the Alamo, Part 1

This is probably the first of many posts in the next week about the closing of the original Alamo Drafthouse since John and I will practically be living there until the doors close on Wednesday. I’ve been feeling all nostalgic about the move for months and was moved to tears after reading XL’s cover story today. I think it was the photo of 1997 Tim looking like a sweet faced teenager and wearing a TUCKED IN SWEATER that got me.

John and I are both a lot excited and a little overwhelmed by this next week of viewing pleasure:
Tonight: The Ultimate Singalong Mixed Tape!
Saturday: Joss Whedons Birthday, including Serenity screening, Buffy Sing-Along and Buffy and Angel finales
Sunday: Half-Ass-A-Thon
Wednesday: Last Night at the Alamo - The Big Night Feast, Earthquake, Night Warning

Yep, 3 of those events will be over 9 hours of entertainment heaven. As our friend Bryan Thompson would say, we “can sleep when we’re dead.” For your viewing pleasure, here’s our group photo for our application for BNAT 6:

etriganartGuide To Lacing

I know as soon as I post this that Kelly will be sitting in his office in sock feet with his sneakers spread across his desk, but if I can contribute just a little more to America’s declining productivity…well, who am I to stand against the tide?

Use this guide to find alternate lacing designs for your sneakers.

beckyLifeDolce Vita, Austin, Tuesday, 2:29 pm

Danny and I have been temporarily misplaced this afternoon while the house gets organically (supposedly) treated for fleas. Miss Hannigan is off getting a bath, Philip and Cassie drew short straws and are at the vet. Leaving me and a crated unhappy Danny sitting on the patio at Dolce Vita where I’m wondering what the hell all of the other people here do for a living. I’m enjoying a sugar free vanilla italian soda and have given up on getting any real work done. No surprise, my hippy neighbor whose dogs are always getting loose in the neighborhood is here. The man at the table next to me - clearly an artist/hippy of the old school variety - is telling his friend about the haunted house he lives in. His friend suggests that he sit down and ask the spirit if he can draw her, or that he incorporate more dolls and “things that little girls like” into the decor. He seems serious. Amy Whitehouse is loudly crooning and Danny bleats in tune. There’s a little breeze, but it’s starting to feel like summer in Texas. Here’s Danny looking unhappy:

etriganEntertainmentTSOTAL - Episode 12: Animals

Stories about a racoon and rat trainer, and a photographer who raises creatures for the sole purpose of documenting the food chain are boring. The David Sedaris scripted Pine Tree Players skit about Animal Court is very amusing, but the only real treat in this episode is a piece discussing the anthropological reasons for man walking upright, and a pair of distance runners who decide to prove the reason for bipedal evolution is to be able to outrun antelope.

etriganEntertainmentTSOTAL - Episode 11: Enemies

The bulk of this story — broken into four acts — is about a pair of friends whose relationship turns in on itself in high school. Ira speaks with both adult men, and their divergent memories of the unfolding events bears similarities to Episode 21: Factions. Hearing how the current state of their lives compare to their youth is a compelling draw. The show is capped with a short reading of one of TAL regular David Sedaris’s stories.

etriganEntertainmentTSOTAL - Episode 9: Julia Sweeney

This is another important episode of TAL broken into three parts from the same performer, SNL’s Julia Sweeney. At a alternative-comedy show called Un-Cabaret during the mid-90’s Sweeney performs some very personal and grimly funny true stories about her and her brothers run-in with cancer.
