The artistic value in these “artistic photo ops” lies largely in the photographer’s choice of where to put his or her frame. A photo taken of a sculpture has its own value because it creates something new from within the sculpture. (like how a sculptor only takes the existing sculpture out of a block of granite. yeah, just like that)

But does this shot really create anything new? Unlike the doll heads, this photo is pretty much showing you the same thing you would have seen had you stood in front of the piece yourself. I think it’s pretty close to the art/rip-off line. At the very least it removes the head from its context, which is worth something.

Would this post be less bullshit if I had an art degree?

ok, this one does cross that line. however, a sculpture that has lots of sight lines to choose from (like the doll heads or even more complex) would not cross the “rip-off” line.
