Alamo Drafthouse Fansite

I’ve been happy with the participation (and antici…pation) of this blog. I’ve been unhappy with my personal media blog and my laziness in keeping it updated. So, I changed the focus of Worth Watching to make it an Alamo Drafthouse fansite. Any of you Austinites that are on this board are automagically authorized to post over there. Join me in giving the Austin film watching (and participating) community a little kick in the pants. I want to see Drafthouse and movie related posts, while leaving AICN to take care of movie gossip and the national/international movie scene.

...and the t-shirt

I almost forgot the awesome, AWESOME BNAT5 t-shirts we got. It’s covered with inside jokes, but if you ask we might let you in on it.

(Now that we’ve got all that out of the way — and I’ve had some sleep — it’s time to talk about the movies.)

Movie Poster-Card Schwag

A special thanks goes to Father Geek for organizing the final give-aways of this event. He built two identical decks of movie poster-cards, dumped one set into a box that he walked through the line of waiting ticket holders. (If you got there late, you didn’t get a card.) The cards were matched to high-end movie schwag or collections of movie schwag and the schwag was passed out after all the movies were over. It was certainly an unexpected treat and we loved it.

Poster Schwag

I’ve built quite a collection of movie posters on my own, but my collection is nearly doubled thanks to the last two years of BNAT. Here’s a break down of the posters Becky and I received this year. Note that most of the posters were common to both our poster rolls, except for the last four. (This is standard m.o. for BNAT, AFAIK. Everyone gets the same set of posters except for one or two special ones.)

Bag Schwag

Now that we no longer have to kiss Harry’s ass, we can start thanking him profusely. Time to start the wrap-up discussions and I’ll kick it off with a breakdown of our bag schwag.

When I was doing radio in college, one of the highlights was when the mail come in and we got to dig through the record label schwag. Now, I get the occasional geek schwag at work and Alamo Drafthouse schwag — like X-Men dog tags — and the last two years I’ve not only thrilled to my BNAT bag schwag but with a Texas marriage I’m entitled to half the stuff in a second bag! (Do you think I could convince a divorce court judge to give me the cool half and stick my wife with the S1M0NE t-shirt half?)

Friday Night Meeting Spot

Many of us Austinites are otherwise occupied on Friday night, but we should all make an effort to meet our weekend co-horts and do a little socializing. To that end, I’ve picked a spot for us all to meet and hang out at. Wear a BNAT or cool movie t-shirt and come to Halcyon for coffee or adult beverage. (Show some guts and wear a t-shirt from this list !) Halcyon serves the best coffe in town. The guy who runs it knows that good coffee comes from two things: the right beans and the right process.

(I myself will be in North Round Rock early in the evening, but I plan on coming by for an hour or so between 9-10pm.)

meet up details.

This is aimed at the John Hugh’s extra club.
When and where do we want to meet before the event Saturday morning. We have to hang w/ Rod as the tickets are in his name.
Do we want to carpool? how many vehicles. I can provide a free parking space for one car easy, maybe 2, which is very close to the drafthouse.

Emails Sent

I just got my email from Tim. There’s not much in it we don’t already know — tickets will be $45, and you must get your ticket by December 1st. On December 1st, he’ll post a list of ticket purchasers. If you’re not on that list, you need to contact him immediately or lose your place.

One new point:

“We have a big change from last year… THERE WILL BE NO CAMERAS OR VIDEOCAMERAS ALLOWED AT ALL. I know this kinda sucks, but it’s a hard rule.”

Oh, and Harry wants birthday presents.

Books Into Movies

(Thanks to my wife’s bookclub ) I just finished Carter Beats The Devil and it’s apparent that Glen David Gold wrote this with a feature film in mind. It’s already been optioned by Paramount for Cruise/Wagner and Robert Towne so my desire for it becoming a film is likely to be realized.

Any other books out there just begging for adaptation?

Obscure Movies

One of my favorite things about BNAT was catching old films I had never heard of. Night Warning was a special treat — though I readily admit it that it’s schlock, it was enjoyable campy schlock. Harry seems reticent to commit to BNAT6 and beyond (and he certainly doesn’t need our help picking out obscure films) but let’s give up some suggestions for future BNAT or Drafthouse events.

Etrigan, The Evil Blog Czar

I’ve edited comments in a few posts and I’ll apologize up front. Harry’s gone to a lot of trouble to make BNAT special by getting us exclusive access to films — some of which have yet to even be released. Someone in the industry went out on a limb to get these prints to Harry, and while we may not like their current work that person may someday do something really cool that we’ll want to see — and if we hurt their feelings or make them feel like BNAT/AICN/Drafthouse can’t be trusted with sneak preview films they may decide to pass us by for another city/group.

My only prediction

I spend a vast amount of time every year guessing what movies will be shown at BNAT. In four years in a row I believe that I have been right once (maybe twice).

This year I will make only one guess.

Here is my only BNAT prediction: Someone involved from the last movie shown will be in attendance this year.

Getting into town

For anyone coming into Austin for BNAT:

I am a cab driver here in town and will be happy to pick up anyone who needs a ride from the airport. Also to take anyone out on the town once they have arrived.

E-mail me at rod@paperstreet.tv and I’ll give out the number to call or schedule a pick up.

With my day driver a cab will be avalible 24/7, and I’ll be giving discounts to any BNAT attendees.

Bryant's Essay

Since smallerdemon showed us his, I figure I’ll go ahead and post mine.

BNAT Etiquette

Here’s a few related questions:

  • what movies can we discuss from previous BNATs?
  • what movies are off-limits?
  • do we have to refer to certain films (Salome, Boring Depressing Dwarves) indirectly?

Up and running

As usual with a fresh blog, I’ve got a lot of work to do before I’m happy with the appearance of it but it is functional.
