These are my DVD and Blu-Ray picks that are getting released this week…plus a couple from last week when I was too busy with Fantastic Fest to go DVD shopping. (It is a BIG BIG week for new releases, btw.)

Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) - You can’t deny a classic, even if this edition has fourteen words in the title. I can’t wait to watch the (at-the-time miraculous) computer rendered ballroom again. You can also buy it in DVD Packaging if that kind of thing matters to you.

Hard Candy - This is the movie for which Ellen Page should have won an Oscar, but the Academy is scared of horror films. I never thought I’d see this on Blu-Ray, and now I may not sleep until I get to see it in HD.

Peanuts Holiday Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas / It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown / A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving) - I hope you were listening when I told you not to buy the individual Blu-Ray discs a few months ago, because now you can get them in one set. Of course, if you wait until November you can get a special edition that comes with with window clings.

Twas the Night Before Christmas - Finally a chance to have my favorite Christmas special. It would be better on Blu-Ray with a lot of Rankin-Bass related extra material, but I’ll take what I can get.

Iron Man 2 - Not quite as good as the first one, but still a fun ride. It was one of the best summer movies this year.

Frozen - I really like Adam Green, and it’s impressive to pull off what is essentially a one scene movie, but I am frustrated by characters who keep making stupid choices.

The Blair Witch Project - It makes sense that we’re seeing a resurgence of the fauxumentary when the movie that started it all is getting a Halloween High Def release.

The Exorcist (Extended Director’s Cut & Original Theatrical Edition) - The first movie that truly scared my wife is a bit of a go-to joke now, but I’m excited to see it anew.

Grindhouse (Special Edition) - Following in the unholy steps of George Lucas, Rodriguez and Tarantino are determined to make you buy the same movie over and over again. Greed is king.

High Tension - A lot of the BNAT crowd didn’t care for this French slasher flick, but I thought it was great fun (though I admit it has gaping flaws in the story.)

The Human Centipede - I have this thing where hype machines turn me off to a movie, particularly one I probably wouldn’t have chosen to see anyway. I still haven’t seen this and since the hype machine is still in full effect I doubt I will.

The Karate Kid - SNL cracked wise on Wil Smith pushing his kids into movies, but this contemporary Hong-Kong-set re-imagining of the original shows that Jaden Smith can act, and it’s a wonderful story.

Mad Max - The best of the trilogy. A must-own.

The Maltese Falcon - It’s the Bogart classic.

My Bloody Valentine 3D (Best Buy Exclusive) - The latest true digital 3D Blu-Ray release is the first RealD horror film. It’s not high art, but if you have a 3D TV this movie was made to be shown.

Ocean’s 11 (1960; 50th Anniversary) - You’ve got a soul of ice if you can resist a movie written by Billy Wilder and starring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Angie Dickinson.

The Secret of Kells - I still haven’t seen this Oscar-nominated animation, but I hear it’s stunning.

Secretary - I had visions of Maggie Gyllenhaal before this movie, but upon it’s release I realized I was a rank amateur at fantasizing.

Troll 2 - If you need to prepare for the release of the making-of documentary, Best Worst Movie, coming in November then you should get the Blu-Ray release of Troll 2 this week and start now.

It is an amazing homage to classic spaghetti westerns, yet it is complete as a stand-alone action/western. This is why Koreans may soon rule international cinema.

These are my DVD and Blu-Ray picks that are getting released this week. (Last week was so barren for new releases, so of course this week overflows.)

The Ghost Writer - Polanski’s crimes are impossible to overlook, but he makes phenomenal movies and this is no exception. Even with the modern film techniques, this has the classic feeling of old-school thrillers like To Catch a Thief. (Yes, I put this movie up against classic Hitchcock.)

Blood Simple - A high def version of the Coen brothers’ debut movie is released in time to test the comparisons of Terribly Happy (that was released just three weeks ago.)

James and the Giant Peach - This is my least favorite of Selnick’s animated movies (behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline…I pretend to forget he did Monkeybone), but it is absolutely so gorgeous that I can’t wait to see it on Blu-ray.
