I have emailed Tumblr’s Marc LaFountain twice in the past two weeks, and I even tried to Get Satisfaction, all to no avail. The lights are on at Tumblr, but no one is home. You can’t run a site like Tumblr without some level of support, and it is apparent that Tumblr has no level of support.

Why not build water collecting/storing roofs for corporate buildings and parking lots? Seems like a better bang/buck than solar panels, ecologically speaking. The large international corporation that employs me is installing solar panels along with other government approved efforts but I’m wondering if this idea carries more weight. If not, why? Are solar panels and water heaters just sexier?

Occasionally, to give myself some science/math challenge (beyond the last page of Make magazine), I like to attack a multidisciplinary problem that is (a) completely inappropriate for a man of my education, and (b) has probably already been done by someone with the appropriate education.

A recent “Believe it or not” cartoon led me to data that: of the fresh water in the world only 0.3 percent is surface water which I verified(?) at Wikipedia.com along with the fact that two-thirds of [fresh water] is frozen in glaciers, I started to wonder about how much water the human race contains and where, in relation, that water is (or is going to come from). I wonder about the noise made that the polar ice caps are melting, and I wonder how the volumes and ratios of population growth and polar ice cap melting align, since the water in a living body is stably “trapped” in itself and therefore removed from the global cycle of water circulation.

The pertinent data I can come up with is that the human body is about 60% water in adult males and 55% in adult females, that the sex ratio is commonly assumed to be 105 boys to 100 girls but the current world wide sex ratio at birth is 107 boys to 100 girls. Also, I found data on world population history that I can use to calculate the amount of H2O mass “trapped” in humans. To get conservative figures, I assumed that the average human mass is 60 kg and applied the 100/105 ratio.

                 1800    1850    1900    1950     1999    2050      2150

World Pop.         978   1,262   1,650   2,521    5,978   8,909     9,746
F. Water        15,743  20,315  26,561  40,582   96,231  143,413  156,887
M. Water        18,033  23,270  30,424  46,485  110,228  164,273  179,707
Total H2O       33,777  43,585  56,985  87,067  206,460  307,686  336,594
Delta H2O                  29%     31%     53%      137%     49%       9%

(population in “millions”; mass in Mg)

So I can show the amount of water in humans is currently over 307 metric tons, and the change in that amount over the last 5 decades is an increase of 50%.

I’ve found charts about the rate change in the polar ice caps, but I can’t find anything with actual numbers. Anyone know what that is? or does anyone have arguments about my approach?

There is the premise that if you have to explain a performance art piece it loses its value. However, much like an old movie with a clever twist, if you haven’t seen it by now you can’t blame someone else for telling you that Bruce Willis’s character is a ghost — enough time has passed that it is your fault for not seeing the movie. On the innernets time passes very quickly, and if you haven’t heard about Paige Railstone by now then you’ve missed most of the piece the Nerdfighters (propelled by author John Green) have been performing for about a week now.

Here’s a spoiler video about this collective-hive-mind internet performance piece that sort of blows me away…now that I understand it. Initially I have to admit I was annoyed and didn’t truly understand, but that happens a lot in my relationship with art.

Around 0:50 in the Tron Flynn Lives clip the rider pushes a button that appears to drop the bike. I presume this would do two things: (1) lower the center of gravity, improving cornering, and (2) decrease surface area exposed to the wind, decreasing drag and increasing speed. Why wouldn’t the bike just start out at that level? I can think of three possible reasons: (1) it’s less comfortable at the lower setting, (2) a longer wheel base would decrease(?) cornering (negating the lower center of gravity), and (3) decreased road visibility.

Any engineers or bike riders/makers want to try and clear this up?

I’m trying to be understanding about the whole thing, but every time I look more into it, the madder I become. Sure, AT&T has to be concerned about their bottom line, but I’ve been doing the math and if my bottom line is improved by kicking them to the curb then they really need to reassess where they put their bottom line.

At first, this was just about trying to get the new iPhone. I figured I would get one for me and give my wife my “old” one (that just came back new/refurb from the Genius bar two months ago). I’m willing to spend a little cash to do this, and it would give AT&T the chance to charge me another $30/month since we’d be adding an additional iPhone to our plan. I guessed it would benefit them to cut me a deal, but I’ve been rebuffed multiple times and told that I would have to pay $200 more per phone than the deal they are giving new customers.

So, I started doing the math, looking at many options including selling my current iPhone (which goes for an amazingly good price on eBay) and it turns out I could actually “make” money switching to T-Mobile, getting both of us the Google phone. (I could probably even take the money I’m “making” and buy the new T-Mobile phone when it’s released in the coming months.) Take a look at this:

$ -360.00

cancel AT&T

$ +350.00

sell iPhone 3G on eBay

$ -300.00

sign-up with T-Mobile; 3 lines; 2 G1/Android phones, 1 free phone

$ +492.00

AT&T vs T-Mobile monthly ($156.00 – $115.00 = $41.00; x12 months)

– – – – – –

$ -182.00

savings after a year with T-Mobile

Looking at that savings and thinking about the increased cost to upgrade Becky and I to new iPhones (over $400), plus the extra monthly cost, makes me angry enough to consider canceling my AT&T U-Verse package, too. …I should start seeing how much I could save by doing that.

I hate to be that guy — no, I don’t — but, after seeing Juno over a dozen times, I feel I must draw attention to a “glaring” set of errors in the script and hence the movie, all in one phrase. I’ve repeated this quote several times with an admitted ignorance to the object:

…and she always smells like methylmethacrylate…

It is two words, methyl methacrylate.

Methyl methacrylate is actually a compound used to make plastics like plexiglas and PVC pipe. (It would make more sense for her dad, Mac, to smell like methyl methacrylate.)

The word she should have used is methyl acrylate which is “present in nail lacquer”.

Juno pronounces it “methyl methacralyte”. My chemistry knowledge is limited, but I don’t think there is such a thing. (Any chemist who wants to correct me, please do.)

IMDb avenger to the rescue!

Now that my world is shattered, I have to decide if I should quote the movie directly or corrected for the sake of science.

Dear Diablo Cody-  Shame, shame.
