KellyMcPoliticsTorture? I just waterboarded her, she's soaked.

I’m having a near-summer 04-level head implosion today reading about the Military Commissions Act which passed the House and is on its way to passing the Senate. (This is the one that lets George Bush define torture and interpret the Geneva Conventions so we can all be sure we’re still the good guys. It’s also going to let the people’s branch pretend like it’s still part of our government.)

Two quotes really crystallize my view of our two political parties:

House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) — “It is outrageous that House Democrats, at the urging of their leaders, continue to oppose giving President Bush the tools he needs to protect our country.”

Way to take the high road there Johnny, this issue is too important to be playing it for political hay.

House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) — “Defending America requires us to marshal the full range of our power: diplomatic and military, economic and moral. And when our moral standing is eroded, our international credibility is diminished as well.”

There you go — Democrats, the party of ideals. Oh wait hold on (from the article)…

Many congressional Democrats decided to swallow their misgivings and vote for the bill to avoid being portrayed as less than vigilant against suspects captured in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere.

AGGGHHHHHH!!!!

We wouldn’t want to be portrayed as being a country that doesn’t torture people and values the ideals on which it was founded, would we? We can’t have somebody running an attack ad in the next month that says we love terrorism because people totally won’t vote for us if we love terrorism.

Well the important thing is that this bill gets passed so that our president will be retroactively exempted from any war crimes he may have comitted while willfully violating the Geneva Conventions. We can’t have him worrying about that while he’s trying to fight terror.

OK, back to your regular programming. Just had to vent.
