“Text and email are polite invitations to a conversation. They happen at the speed and leisure of both the sender and the receiver. In stark contrast, when you get a phone call, it’s almost always a convenient time for the caller and a bad time for the recipient, who I refer to as the “victim” because I insist on accuracy. My philosophy is that every phone conversation has a loser.”
– One of the valuable things I got from “Team Lead” class was that each medium of conversation has implicit demands and consequences for the recipient more so than the sender. Calling someone says “I need something that’s more important than what you’re doing right now.” An email or text empowers the recipient to choose the priority, and the more you empower others the more they respect when you have truly urgent needs. They (possibly subconsciously) know that you only bother them for important things. (quote from http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/phone/ )
