DVD New Releases – 6/29/2010
These are my DVD and Blu-Ray picks that are getting released this week.
- Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief – It’s a shame how awful this movie is, considering how fun the books are.
- Hot Tub Time Machine – I didn’t get a chance to see this, but now that I see Lizzy Caplan is in it I’ll make it a priority.
-
Wholphin Issue 11
– A new edition of collected shorts — always good stuff.
- The White Ribbon – This was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar, and like most of the films in that category I didn’t get a chance to see it at the theater. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful but disturbing story set in pre-WWI Germany and I’m definitely adding it to my queue.
-
SuicideGirls Must Die! (Unrated)
– Speaking of high-concept script driven cinema with thick layers of subtext.
-
The Crazies (2010)
– I remember having a lot of problems when I saw this early in the year, but I’m curious to watch it again to see how much it bugs me the second time around.
- Ultimate Machine Girl: Collectors Tin (3pc) – Have you spent enough money on contemporary Japanese exploitation? No? Ok, buy this movie again — this time with a collector’s tin case and more “features”.
- Wicked Lake: Director’s Cut – You would think a bloody T&A movie would go over great at Fantastic Fest, but this movie was almost universally panned.
-
Blood on the Highway (2008)
– I only mention this because I’m compelled to bring up anything with Whedon alumni in it — Nicholas Brendon, for this movie, and …
-
The Dive from Clausen’s Pier
– a Lifetime movie starring Michelle Trachtenberg, and I forgot to mention…
-
Timer
was released last week starring Emma Caulfield.

“Here’s my favorite trick at the grocery store. We’re in the produce section and I start sorting through the watermelons and act like I’m trying to find one that’s ripe. At some point I ask [my wife] to hold a really big one for me while I get the one under it. She puts her purse down, struggles to get a handle on the watermelon and I just grab the cart and walk away. She’s standing there in the aisle holding this damn watermelon and I’m nowhere to be found. She falls for at least twice/year. I never stop laughing!”

“You see, when the FCC tests are run, the head is required to be in the vicinity of the phone. But, the hand is not!!” Did you see my earlier post about iPhone 4 wifi issues? I put a comment there with this article and then I suffered what I think is brain crack. How about an integrated case design with built-in headset? I picture a flexible shell (because I prefer them to hard cases) with an integrated plug in the interior that goes directly into the phone.[1] Then an external wire that wraps around the edges of the case, that can be pressed flush into a groove (or two) and then the earbuds are pushed flat into the back of the case. Feel free to steal this idea. All I ask is you make the product generally available for me to purchase. …or does anyone have the knowledge of plastic work, and/or tiny cable construction where I could MAKE my own? [Footnote 1] Is it possible to have something in the earphone plug so that it doesn’t trigger the headphone detector? I’m wondering if this case could have a switch where you can turn it on/off. Uh-oh. iPhone 4 wifi testing. All done about arms length from 802.11n Apple Time Machine. In order from top to bottom: Tests 1 and 4 in left hand. (It was unable to do an upload test at all for number 1!) Tests 2 and 5 in right hand. Tests 3 and 6 with iPhone held delicately between thumb and forefinger on glass front and back.

“After a series of secret meetings this week between the Federal Communications Commission and top industry lobbyists was revealed by the Wall Street Journal, FCC Chief of Staff Edward Lazarus tried to explain away the backroom meetings in a post on the FCC’s blog.” It’s time to publicly state that I am very unhappy with Obama lately. Net Neutrality will be as important to this country’s future as freeways. Pair these secret meetings with Jon Stewart’s rant about executive power and I start to believe that the difference between Bush and Obama is uncomfortably closer than we voters originally thought. My review of the movie Cyrus which is hitting more screens this week…more than the 4 screens it was on last week when it was officially released. I am not sure how 4 screens isn’t called “limited” release.

I think @FantasticFest attendees would appreciate the creepy turn Achewood has taken lately. Is there a Fantastic Fest for web comics?
Click the picture and you can read the from the beginning of the current storyline that started on May 9.

I wasn’t aware that Gawker runs Gizmodo (which sort of answers my earlier question) until I noticed the snarky “funny” note above this book, followed the link to the image source, and noted the base url is “gawkerassets.com”.
The links that I’ve followed into Gizmodo have always been irreverent, but I’ve never noticed them to carry Gawker’s trademark snark stink. I know that I am over the style of bitter snark that Gawker deals in, and I wonder how long it will be until everyone is.

The layers of luddite in the online comics today are deep. I’ve had the same disc from Netflix since 04/15/08 — Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, since you asked — yet I’ve watched nearly 70 movies in the last year through “Watch it Now”.

– Anyone else notice the increased dismissive tone Gizmodo is using when discussing Apple? (As quoted here from The Complete Guide to Using iOS 4.) Has it always been like this? or are they upset about getting banned from the Apple WWDC after the iPhone 4 kerfuffle? I’m too lazy to dig around Gizmodo and see what they’re treatment of Android is like these days, but I imagine they are complimentary.
