1997 – The Real Internet

Dear YouTube Generation-

All the way back in 1997, I hosted a page of videos on my web site created using cutting edge technology. They were about 1% the size of the 3-4 minute vlogs we love today, and I was only able to afford hosting them because I was friends with the guy who owned the servers. Here, for your amusement, are those videos.

First, the 1997 equivalent of a viral video:

Next, two videos based on sound clips from the (freshly released!) Snoop Doggy Dogg album, The Doggfather, including (1) the viralest of viral videos ever, (2) Hitler celebrating after Jesse Owens wins a race, and (3) using the latest in software from Pinnacle Micro to create video titles. (Isn’t video editing all about making fools of murderous dictators? :) )

Last, three almost unintelligible clips of the University of Texas Longhorns football team in the Big 12’s inaugural season, featuring quarterback James Brown.

p.s. You can still see the old page of videos on my site, but I haven’t been able to find a plug-in that will show them anymore.

d00D! Show some netiquette. It took me 20 minutes to download this page. We can’t all afford v.90 modems.
