I dropped off three old systems at my company’s recycling spot this morning. To be honest, I did it to appease my wife and make her think I was getting rid of junk. Hopefully she doesn’t realize this donation represents about 5% of all the computer gear I’ve squirreled away in our house. You should “find a spot”: near you to unload old equipment.

One of the systems I dropped off was my first “transportable” gaming system. Anyone remember “LAN parties”:, when we’d drag all our computers to one person’s house and play networked games all day? Does anyone do that anymore? I suppose our LAN parties died because (1) all my friends got old and had kids, and (2) the internet became fast enough that local LANs were almost pointless.

Here’s the system I dropped off:

Old PC Side 1  Old PC Side 2

I’ll make you a deal. I’ll give $10 through PayPal (including enough to cover the PayPal fee according to “this calulator”: to the person who can best identify the stickers and the dates they were applied. (Ties will result in a random drawing overseen by me and one of my co-workers.) Leave a comment with your guesses, and I’ll pick a winner tomorrow at 8:00am CDT. (Closest guess is subject to my decision about the accuracy, based on my best approximation.)

Clay Pigeons – ID: dark, strange movie with Joaquin Phoenix, Vince Vaughan and Janeane Garafalo. Applied: 1998

Redondo Beach – ID: RB, CA. Applied: 1998
KGSR sticker – ID: Austin TX radio station. Applied: looks to be about a 1998 version.

Eels sticker – ID: band. Applied: Had the same sticker myself when Electro-Shock Blues came out in 1998.

CD Now – ID: website (used back in the day before Amazon became their parent company and go-to online retailer). Applied: Although they were on the scene back in 1994 (!) I’m going to say 1998, the year they went public.

Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her – ID: Two-chick Japanese band. Applied: my best guess would be somewhere in the middle of their run: 1997.

Ben Folds Five – ID: band. Applied: another wild guess: probably after Whatever and Ever Amen, 1996

Asylum St. Spankers – ID: Austin band. Applied: No idear. Since these all seem to be applied in the same time frame, let’s go with 1997.
