Looks like we’re going to need a bigger garden.

We’ve been discussing Peak Oil for quite a while around here.

Now we can all start worrying about Peak Wheat.

Are potatoes the answer?

i’ll try to find a link, but you should also be worried about peak fertilizer. their was an NPR article about China raising fertilizer pricing, which will effect most of the pacific rim growers, who feed the whole world.

I just read something about Rock Phosphate — it’s an organic fertilizer (although calling a mineral nutrient source “organic” kind of stretches the meaning of the word) but it’s also apparently an essential ingredient of Glyphosate, a.k.a Roundup. “Roundup-ready” crops, that is, genetically modified food crops that can be doused with Glyphosate to control competing weeds, are a big product for Monsanto, particularly in developing countries. However, apparently we’ve only got about 40-50 years of Rock Phosphate left. What happens if “Roundup-ready” becomes standard practice?

I guess we can take solace in the fact that a couple of years of compost and cow shit can get a field back onto a sustainable track.
