Eggs come out of a chicken’s butt, and other revelations

This NYT article got me thinking today. I’ve been a pretty solid veggie for the past 2 years, and aside from the occasional sushi-related back slide, I’m pretty sure it’s going to stick this time. I’ve always said that my reasons for going meat free were more practical (texture and taste icks me out, mainly) than moral. But the further I go down this road the less sure I am about that. We owned chickens when I was a kid, I’m an animal lover, and I do think cows have pretty eyes. I’m certain I could never watch an animal be slaughtered and not throw up/pass out. So maybe I really am just a stone’s throw away from joining a hippy commune with Alicia Silverstone. That said, I do think that the movement towards ethical, thoughtful consumption of all of our resources (meaty things included) is a step in the right direction.

I know the Porch has a whole lot of people who love bacon. Bacon comes from a magical animal named Babe.

Putting bytes to thoughts that many have heard me verbalize before: I believe vegetarianism is a near-future progressive level of humanity. Considering the ecological impact of mass animal husbandry, not to mention the cruelty, we cannot continue to increase population without a change in diet. I, personally, have not been able to give up meat. (I once attempted to go veggie and made it to almost 1:45am when I had to make an emergency run for the border.) However, I support anyone who can/does go veggie/vegan with an intelligent approach.

I have started leaning towards improving the “ethical”-ity of my meat consumption though. If Becky can negotiate her problems with Greenling I will probably start ordering my meat products from them. Otherwise it is difficult, even in Austin, to find cruelty-free meat.

I’ve been veggie for 14 or 15 years now, and finally in the last few months I’ve been tempted to try some scallops or a shrimp po-boy. I’m pretty sure I could never eat Babe again, or Bessie or Bambi.

But maybe I’ve been watching too much Top Chef recently, because those scallops are looking a little more succulent than they used to, and at least they’re just bi-valves (just 2 years ago I’d have been shocked to hear that coming out of my mouth.) And with Mardi Gras season in full swing, I’m starting to think of fresh French Market shrimp again, deep-fried on a bun.

No matter what, I will always eat as low on the food chain as possible, and I don’t begrudge people their meat if they’ve gotta have it, but I do think more people should be doing as much as they can to buy cruelty-free products and stop supporting the factory farm industry.
