I Heart Sufjan Stevens

Earlier this week John and I watched Danielson: A Family Movie (or, Make a Joyful Noise Here), a very sweet documentary about music, and faith, and family. I really liked the movie, but feel a bit guilty that my main take away was to fall in love with Sufjan Stevens, who sang a draw droppingly beautiful version of his “To Be Alone with You” during the film. Albums were immediately downloaded from ITunes and he’s been in heavy rotation since. I recognize we’re coming a little late to this party since he’s been a critical darling for a few years, but wow.

On the IPod shuffle right now, I have Sufjan, Ben Lee, Matt the Electrician, Elliot Smith, a little Beatles and Feist. Between the heavenly music and a fabulous book that I’m reading, the 4 hour plane ride from Boston yesterday (business trip) went in the blink of an eye.

We saw two movies in the span of a week that really spoke to me about family and music. Through my mom’s side of the family (and, since his retirement, my dad) music has been a real binding force. (Between my mom, dad, aunt, and three female cousins we can form a band of guitar, mandolin, piano, bass (all types), flute, and violin with multi-part harmonies that seem to be woven with little effort.) We watched Once which isn’t a great film but speaks a lot about creating and loving music, and the absence of family in a melancholy style. Then we watch Danielson and it covered the more familiar ground of music and family. If you enjoy a more barebones approach to songsmithing then you should NetFlix both of these films.
