The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the San Francisco Bay area and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico are competing to design the nation’s first new nuclear bomb in two decades.

Being a pacifist, this scares me. On the other hand I am realistic and know that bad things happen. But is this really the best way to go?

The article says this is being done because our current stockpile will soon get too old to be reliable and the new weapons will be no more powerful than the current ones. But what new features can we expect from a modern nuclear warhead?

Like iPods, will these be significantly smaller than the last generation? Will they have an integrated Web server and Wifi so anyone with Web access can track their progress? Built in iSight? Will they get an industrial design makeover — you know, to get rid of that dated 80’s Wargames look? Would that involve brushed aluminum, or more of a stealth bomber black?

And is all this just because we want to give Pakistan and North Korea missile envy?

Think this will mean a War Games remake? That might just make it worth while.
