Kleptones – 24 Hours
Another album from Kleptones I haven’t had a chance to give this a listen, but From Detroit to JA was incredible and their earlier work blew me away. Somewhere in there I was even introduced to a rap that I didn’t connect to a group until I saw the Dead Prez on Dave Chapelle’s Block Party.

It is very intricate. When I was listening to a couple songs on the car stereo I thought they were chaotic, porrly arranged. Then I heard them with the headphones on and clearly it was well-organized — I just couldn’t hear the detail before.

I’ve been through the (double) album 3 times now and it’s almost too much. There are some moments of pure genius, and the depths that they plumbed for material on this album is astonishing. It is rich, rich, rich.
They also are introducing a new(ish) concept to the mash-up. On top of the usual time shifting and phase shifting (tuning vocals to match the underlying music) they are bending the vocals to make Elton John, Paul Simon and others sing things that never were recorded in a studio. Very impressive.
This is definitely a headphones-only record.
