Another album from Kleptones I haven’t had a chance to give this a listen, but From Detroit to JA was incredible and their earlier work blew me away. Somewhere in there I was even introduced to a rap that I didn’t connect to a group until I saw the Dead Prez on Dave Chapelle’s Block Party.
Ars Technica ran an article a couple of days ago pimping eMusic. Interesting premise – sell legal music at reasonable prices and trust the customers. All the songs are .mp3 encoded, so will play on whatever you want.
I’ve been a subscriber for a bit over 8 months, and haven’t had a problem finding enough interesting stuff to pull down each month (mostly Jazz, but some actual interesting music). Lately, though, they’ve been really adding some good stuff. Notably for this crowd, they’ve got Trout Fishing in America’s back catalog. So, if you’re feeling guilty about carrying around a dubbed cassette of the Pico de Gallo song for the last two decades, go sign up for the free trial.
Nothing special to post. Just wanted to say hello and thanks to John for letting me in. I’ll try to be good. (hopefully my icon will be up shortly).
Or, Darn, why didn’t I think of that?
So, I throw the kids in bed tonight and head out to the backyard for a little bit of peace, quiet, and contemplation. Which means, naturally, that I’m going to throw some fallen branches, etc, into the fire pit and watch them burn. ‘Cause I dig that.
And the fire’s darn near perfect – five decent sized limbs from the pine out front, enough tinder to make a good bed of coals, and some scrap lumber to give staying power. Sizzles, crackles and pops from the pine, and collapses nicely on itself, not needing to be tended so much as admired.
And I wonder – why not do fire as performance art? Engineer structures, ideally using whatever material was available, that will burn and collapse in on themselves in an interesting way. Think Aggie Bonfire but without the jackboots.
Anyway, just a peek into my mind.
Oh, and proof that Carson Daily/Earl Hickey know a thing or two about the nature of the universe – the neighbors three houses down have a huge thing for fireworks. Every night, all freakin’ summer. At least they usually knock it off about 10 PM.
My name is Bill. I’m just trying to be a better person.

Real reason Vista’s not shipping until this time next year?
Billy G’s been in the studio. The BSOD Album comes out in November.
Per slashdot, they’re releasing Picasa for Linux.
Rock on.
Which means that the OS X version should be out about…
now.
Since we’re on the subject of books, I’m finishing up The DaVinci Code, and I’ve got to say it is, hands down, the absolute worst novel I’ve read in a long, long time. Dan Brown did stitch together a gripping plot, but his writing – ouch.
Read more!My favorite daily dose of belly-button lint, Open Source, did a bit a couple of nights ago searching for the Great American Novel of the last 25 years. And surprise, surprise, they weren’t able to find it. But, it was a welcome breath of fresh air after a couple of weeks of ritual political finger pointing, still without any ideas of how to stop the train of state from running off the tracks.
Read more!According to Austinist, The Alamo Draft House Downtown will soon become a non-profit to cover skyrocketing rent and property taxes. No details on the site yet, but I’ll be keeping an eye out to become an official patron. I wonder what I’d have to pay to always get in to BNAT…
Two Austin icons are gone in two days. Lloyd Bentsen, one of Texas most beloved Senators and a former Secretary of the Treasury, died yesterday. The worst thing you could say about him is that he left his seat open for Kay Bailey Hutchison when he answered the call to serve the POTUS. Clifford Antone, the owner/operator of famous Antone’s nightclub, tax evader and drug trafficker, passed away early this morning. Two men who couldn’t be further from each other on the spectrum of society yet both were loved and respected for contributing so much to the Heart of Texas.
I’m obviously so busy at work today. But this isn’t going to help — another game from EYEMAZE, creator of, most notably, GROW
This one, Chronon, appears to have some time elements to it, where you can jump around to different times of day to influence the environment.
I’m off to lunch, but it should be a busy afternoon.
