McCain v Bush

I really liked NPR’s piece on the Detainee Treatment rider this morning although it was admiteddly far from “fair and balanced”. It was particularly interesting to hear Scott McClellan’s double-speak as he tried to make us believe this bill would simultaneously be “duplicative” and interfere with the Presdent’s War on Terror. Geez, what jerk.

And to Senator Setevens: The term is not “follow by example” it is “lead by example”. You are slime.

I, also, like the bit about legislation coming from Congress.

This is a fine example of a time in which the press ought not to be “fair and balanced.” NPR’s bit was brilliant, IMO, focusing on the rider and the positive benefits of it, and not resorting to outright ridicule of the Administration and Sen. Stevens.

McCain’s right on this one – the US has hugely higher standards with regard to human rights than most of the rest of the world. It shouldn’t come down to needing regulation, but, given the scrutiny with which our operations are followed, this is another way of defining who we are as a country.

There are clear examples of right and wrong. Torture, even in the “Ticking Bomb” scenario, is wrong.

Especially in a “war of ideas.”
