Jankowskis Conflicted
If it weren’t for the terrible precursor that caused it, the Jankowsiki boys would rejoice at one of the big changes happening in London since the bombings.

The bums will always lose! You hear me Jankowski?!
Sorry. There’s a quote for every occasion in that movie.
I’ve been riding to work a couple of days a week. The folks here are used to it now. The first day I rode, a couple of jokers took my bike and held it for ransom, stating that “until I re-joined the rest of the gas-dependent drones” I wouldn’t see it again. I physically bring it into my office now. No bike racks, don’t you know. Fascists!

The stats aren’t too suprising, but I would bet they would tend to even out if looked at in a different manner, such as deaths per number of trips taken by individual. A bus drives many more miles with many more passengers at a time than does a cyclist.

This was happening even pre-bombings, thanks to the punative toll system in place on London’t roads. Not that reducing traffic is a bad thing, but it’s nice to see unintended consequences. I’d also propose that anything that gets people out, at a “medium pace” on a level where eye-contact and friendly “Hey, howya doin’?“s can be traded is positive in the long run.
The wife, boys, and I have been making the trek into Mystic on the bikes pretty frequently this summer, and it kind of suprises me how much more you notice about neighbors, etc, on bikes than in a car.
Fight the cagers.
And I’d throw this into the “fighting terrorism” category, too. Stay home and the bums have won.
This chart struck me as interesting, though:
FATALITY RATES (per billion km)
Bus and coach 0.4
Rail and Tube 0.49
Car 3.1
Bicycle 42
Pedestrian 59
Motorcycle 106
