Minor victory over Nike

Those of us of an age will be happy to know that punk rock has triumphed over The Man. Nike Skateboarding (which, by its very name must indicate that punk is dead) decided yesterday that using an iconic album cover by Minor Threat for their own retarded promotion without the permission of Ian MacKaye was a bad idea. This blog here has a picture of the poster in question, as does Gawker, where I got the link. Message to all corporations: co-opting the punk ethic to build your pseudo street cred will still fool the children into buying your product, just stick to working with Blink 182 or whatever.

Ah, beautiful.

BTW, are you, too, secretly encouraging your kid to skate? Jake came downstairs the other day with ripped jeans and a t-shirt (with dinosaurs on it instead of black with white words), then pulled on ratty sneakers and walked out the door without tying them.

My heart was all a-flutter. I may have to buy him a skateboard after he learns how to ride without training wheels.

Ha! Yes, but only because I want to start again and I need an excuse. There’s a big half-pipe near downtown with a smaller half-pipe next to it for beginners that I pass by all the time, thinking “some day soon.”

Just this weekend we were at The Parlor for pizza and punk, when I shared a moment with a buddy over “Stepping Stone” — my first punk 45 single — and we discussed our love of Ian and my friend reccommended Ian’s new jawn The Evens and I mentioned this site where you can locate artists who professed edge and then lost it.
