Hincapie starts things off right for the Discovery Channel team. Hincapie seems to really love cycling – how else could he get excited about riding in crappy weather.

Here’s hoping that George keeps up the good work, especially on the cobbles.

Psychoactive drugs are so, like, 1990s. What all the hip types are doing is portable electroshock

I am so disgusted at the number of awards that The Aviator is getting. It demonstrates how the Academy Awards is more about Hollywood than it is about the movie industry. Almost entirely shot in Hollywood using the incestuous cast and crew of Hollywood…they didn’t even really need us to see it to let themselves know that they made a great movie.

We stopped by McDonald’s with Becky’s friend Jessica for a few happy meals. Jess and I perused the case discussing whether we wanted the boy or girl version. Jess is a hoops fan and wanted one of the crazy basketball-headed toys wearing a jersey. Being a gadget man, I was eyeing the “That’s So Raven” toys but look at this case yourself and pick the worst possible thing you might end up receiving.

I’m surprised you haven’t posted this from the other NR.

In simplest terms, the golden age of computing of the ’60s and ’70s was fueled by a fat pipe of government money. The Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency funded a wide range of what-if projects, including the work that spawned the Internet.

(And phooey on the New Republic for making it difficult to drag and drop quotes.)

(from a co-worker)

New Movie Search by Google: Have you ever remembered a quote or scene from a movie, but forgot which movie it came from? Google just enhanced their search to include movies. To do a movie search, type movie: before a search, and it will limit your search to movies. Examples of what you can search for:

Derivation of the term “parking story”: A FOAF showed up late to a party a few years back and spent a half-hour regaling us with the maneuvering and mechanations of trying to find a parking spot; see also “chirping crickets” and making the hand motion of applying the emergency brake in a sedan — bringing all conversation to a halt.

Along with the home-based fuel cell that I will be installing when I win the lotto, I will be replacing large sections of my roof with solar tiles# that look similar to regular roofing.

After our roof was repaired a couple years back our roof guy — who was awesome; let me know if you need one in central Texas — told me I’d stop admmiring it after a few weeks and that my neighbors had probably already stopped looking up at it. He was right so I think this might not even piss off the wife.

If I found myself to suddenly be a man of leisrue, I’d probably learn several languages and spend my time roaming the world watching for cool movies like this new Japanese robot movie coming out later this year.

I’m making a public bookmark here of this article which takes on the latest issue of Popular Mechanics about debnking 9/11 myths. I will have to go find a copy of the magazine, read it, then return here to read this article…

Anyone want to place odds on me completing this particular quest?

—personal to pointless to political…quite a posting day for me, eh?—

If you want to test your skills against other bpb’ers (and related folks) at picking Oscar winners our group number is “2590” and the password is “utrules”.

I am not surprised at most of the player favorites, but I have to think the people who selected Phantom of the Opera as Best Art Direction either (a) haven’t really seen it or (b) have decided to extend the (mostly god-awful) revival of the 80s to cover Madonna’s most cocaine induced moments. Only Joel Schumacker would take the gayest pop musical of all time and decide it needed something a little more…like “vogueing”. Yes, I admit I vogued in the 80s, but I was being ironic — irony wasn’t dead then.

A quick happy birthday to — not just one! — two of our regulars, Cynthia and BT. Here’s hoping you found a way to spend the day away from the office doing things that are a complete waste of time.

Initial round of pictures from NYC are at Yahoo!

I’ve come to the conclusion that Christo isn’t an artist in the sculptor/painter sense or even so much in the performance art sense. And the true art in “The Gates” wasn’t so much the gates themselves, but the execution.

Kelly and I have discussed “the crash” a few times (though he may think I’m joking) and I am excited to see that I won’t have to sacrifice my Nintendo DS to that problem.
