One of the best things about having kids is, frankly, being able to enjoy children’s books again. And probably my favorite in the board book (if you don’t know, you will someday) set is Sandra Boynton. She’s penned classics frequently quoted around the Jankowski household such as Moo, Baa, La La La (A cow says moo, a sheep says baa, three singing pigs say la la la! – [riotous laughter here] No, no, you say, that isn’t right, a pig says oink all day and night. [I’ll stop so as not to give away the ending]) and Doggies (Even Scamp reads along with this one – Nine Dogs on a Moonlight Night – Everyone howls).
In any case, she does music too. I’ve gone on briefly before about the Philadelphia Chickens which everyone should have in their CD collection. Missy got me Grunt – a collection of Pigorian Chants for Christmas. Well, got being relative – she snagged it as soon as I unwrapped it, and I only got to add it to my iTunes library today.
I’m not a huge fan of Gregorian chant, however, I have always found it kind of soothing. We popped this in while putting together some of Jake’s toys on Christamas, and it was good, right up until the point we realized they were singing “EIEIO”. Then we died laughing.
The book that accompinies the CD is clever, too, and would be worth reading on its own.
