Butt-Numb-A-Thon 6

Becky and I just returned from BNAT6. Eventually I’ll post some commentary and schwag pics, but for now just a list of items we saw and then it’s time for a nap.

Before I get into being anal about this, I need to throw out some big “Thank Yous!”

First and foremost to the big red guy for the holiday season cheer. Now that I’m starting to question whether Santa is real, Harry Knowles is usurping Santa’s place in my belief system. Second (to nobody) is Tim and his beautiful wife Karrie League for sharing their dream with Austin and hosting this affair. The charity that BNAT supports, Saturday Morning Film Club, is one of the most subversive and generous ideas for entertaining children — especially considering neither of these guys has kids…AFAIK. The fact that they do it with BBBS — which my wife, Becky, is part of and loves — is even that much better. Also, thanks to all the regular AICN folks for helping, especially Moriarty and Quint.

Thanks to the studios and the specific people working in the industry who offered up trailers, slides, clips and movies. It is easy to forget that real people were involved in getting this material approved and shipped to BNAT, but I want you to know that all of us appreciate your faith in our love of all things cinematic and your trust that we prize your “intellectual property” as much as you do.

Last, thanks of course to all my fellow BNATers for providing the supportive community that makes staying up 24+ hours easy. I don’t spend enough time getting to know all of you but seeing and hearing you share this passion for film with me makes you my friend. Thanks to the group of friends who applied with me, particularly Becky and Michael Reeves who had to sit next to me the whole time.

(Items in parentheses are not full-length features.) They are shorts, trailers, behind the scenes, etc. We saw a LOT of shorts and trailers so I didn’t list them all — only the ones that stood out for me.

²Dear fellow BNATers, friends and film geeks-

One of the benefits of attending BNAT with my wonderful and lovely wife is we get to double-up on some of the schwag. Barring divorce induced cataclysm (say, for example, only having one ticket to BNAT7 between us) that means we have two of some things that we’d be willing to part with one. Anything marked on our list (²) is available for trade. Let us know what you are interested in and what you might have that is tradeworthy. Our tastes are fairly wide open, so don’t be shy about offers — particularly if you have anfthing related to From Justin to Kelly. (And if you are simply apopletic about an unmarked item, let me know and be prepared to come up with Bring It On or Punch Drunk Love level schwag.)

Thanks, John Osmon aka Johnny Rollerfeet aka etrigan aka jaireaux

I was very disapointed with BNAT this year.
I spoke to a lot of people afterwards who found the list of movies to be very weak.
I’ve been going since the first one – I dont think I’ll go next year.
Reading around on the message boards a lot of people seem to feel the same way.

I’m tired now – off to bed.

I can’t quite express how much I’m looking forward to HHGttG – Douglas Adams severely twisted my view of the world as a youth. I don’t think I’m alone as a member of Gen X. I’d almost put this as our LotR, without the epic rock tie-ins and spiritual overtones. If we’d had numbers similar to the Baby Boom, it would have been.

I have to say I loved the line-up this year. While there certainly weren’t as many thrills as last year (Harry himself said LOTR with Peter Jackson and The Passion with Mel were unbeatable), there weren’t as many soul-sucking lows (House of 1000 Corpses, Twinkletoes).

I was honestly into each movie, and Ong Bak was the only film I’d seen before. (And man, this new version was so cool that it was definetly worth catching again). Miss Sadie in 3d was incredible, Series of Unfortunate Events was much better than I’d expected, and even the Phantom was well done (if you like that sort of thing). The movies worked well together and had a sortof flow to them that’s been missing in the other years, I think.

Govinda, this was only my 3rd year, but I really think this was my favorite so far (based on the whole line-up). Not to be mean, but I think it’s great that you’re thinking about skipping next year. It’s such an exclusive event, and I’d love to see one more seat for someone who’s really into it. As for the group I went with, we’re already planning our photo for next year.

Becky – you’re probably right – its time for us old timers to step aside and let some new folks go see the movies. I had seen most of the stuff on show already so I think thats why I was disapointed.

Honestly, I enjoyed this year much more than last year. I enjoy stuff like The Mutations, Blonde Venus and Toys Are Not For Children. Phantom was simply bombastic. Toys Are Not For Children was great, but terribly lurid (yet I am totally thinking about buying it on DVD). However, I think the swag was better last year. :) Eli Roth was great to sit in front of during Phantom. :) He described it as this year’s Green Boots. Just great comments from him all night. I posted my own stuff up over at http://filmshow.blogspot.com

While this thread is being bumped, I want to pat myself on the back:

Lead actor Daniel Craig has a good lead-actor future ahead of him

As I predicted Craig’s future is bright. If you missed the news or didn’t know who he was when you heard, Craig’s been tapped to play Bond in the new Casino Royale. Go rent Layer Cake and you will see why. I’m extremely excited — it’s the perfect actor for Bond.
