At my office party this year I won a yoga sculpting video (MSRP $30) that I gave to Becky. At Becky’s office party she won a Canon SD300 (MSRP $399) that I took from her. Seems fair, right? Here’s a few pics and videos I took over the Christmas week with the new camera.

My grandmother had a quilting frame up in her living room that she would use to display cards and letters. At Christmas it was covered in cards from friends and family all over the place. Now my cousin lives in my grandmother’s old house, so my uncle took down the frame and cut it into 5 pieces (for each of the five grandkids) and gave it to us for a present. The first thing I did upon returning to Austin was hang it over the tree and put some cards on it.

One of my resolutions is going to be to watch Slashdot more. Caught a bit in the Economist on Einstein’s Big Year Centennial which runs down Einstein’s big accomplishments of 1905:

1. Explaining the Photo-Electric Effect (for which he got his Nobel Prize)
2. First draft of the Theory of Relativity
3. Explaining Brownian Motion and proving atoms exist

All good stuff. There also was a link to PBS’ The Elegant Universe where you can stream all 3 hours of the program (from the book of the same name )

Went on to the bandstand in the sky a couple of days ago. 98 years old or such. Shaw was a clarinet player that set much of the big-band sound. He was a racial pioneer, hiring Billie Holliday to sing for his band. Served in WWII in a band which played for troops in combat zones.

He hadn’t played music since 1954.

What’s everyone been listening to this year? I thought 2004 was pretty stellar, musically. More bands than ever promoted the neo-new wave movement and on the whole, this was a really good thing. In no particular order, here’s what I liked:

Moleskine Planner

Not sure why, but I’ve become somewhat addicted to Moleskine notebooks. They’re durable, have nice paper, and look somewhat unobtrusive. So I was especially happy to see they had a 2005 planner.

What advantages do they have over, say a spiral bound notebook? None, really. Except they look and feel cool, and make you want to use them.

And yes, I’m a nancy-boy. But I’m cool with that.

Those of us kool-aid drinkers are all a-twitter over ThinkSecret’s rumor that Steve Job’s keynote at the Mac convention week after next is going to be a under $500 Mac, aimed at folks who love their iPods but can’t bring themselves to fork over the $1,000 or so that it takes to get into an iBook or iMac.

One of the cooler rumors I’ve heard is that it’ll be aimed at the living room, taking the “digital hub” idea into actual production. Which makes me wonder if Apple hasn’t swung a deal with the MPAA to deliver movies-on-demand, or some sort of iTunes for flicks.

Thanks to Jeff

Ultegra GruppoShimano has updated its Ultegra gruppo to 10 speed (in the rear, multiply that by either 2 or 3 depending on the number of chainrings on the crank to get the number of speeds)

Why do you care? Well, Ultegra 9 speed stuff is selling at extremely steep discounts, and is good stuff. For instance, the Ultegra-9 double crankset is selling for= $90, instead of $170.

Will it make you faster? No, but you’ll feel cooler. Though not quite so cool as if you were running this

LA Times is reporting that Sunday’s earthquake in the Indian Ocean moved the entire island of Sumatra (mmm, coffee) 100’ to the southwest. Sumatra is larger than California.

Stopped in Rockwall, TX on our way back (not to mention Anna, TX on our
way out) to get some charbroiled California fast food. One of the best
reasons to drive North of Dallas is Carl’s Jr at the Love’s truck stops.

I found these at a convenience store in Alma, AR. They’re like peanut
M&M’s except the coating is really light so the candies are only
slightly larger than the sunflower seeds.

I am testing a mail-to-blog posting service from Kevin Cameron called MfOP2. I am waiting to see what the catch is for using the service, but I haven’t found anything yet…

This is one of the toys for The Incredibles from Happy Meals. (I always keep toys on my desk.)

I’d dig this for Christmas.
