This is the extreme edge of conservative politics that strikes me as (not only the opposite of compassion but) Alice-in-Wonderland absurd, but is presented as if it were common sense. Thomas Sowell, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute, writes this article explaining that charging 2x-3x the price for a hotel room as people are escaping the hurricanes of Florida is simply good economics. Here’s the best part:

It is essentially the same story when stores are selling ice, plywood, gasoline, or other things for prices that reflect today’s supply and demand, rather than yesterday’s supply and demand.

So, if due to sudden opportunisitic price increases people buy less food and water for their family, leaving more water for others to buy…well that must be a good thing.
