NSFW due to adult-oriented ads on the page.

As an ad for the next version of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell video game, they’ve developed a web-based game where you have to sneak back into the house after a night of carousing without waking the girlfriend.

It’s a short game, but fun.

Today’s reason: more Haliburton nonsense.

It becomes more apparent that for the Bush administration the definition of legality relates closely to “as much as we can get away with — screw ethics and morals”. Using the government employees around him as shield and scapegoat, Dick Cheney still wants you to believe that he had nothing to do with Haliburton getting the no-bid contract for Iraq rebuilding, and besides…there’s nothing wrong with that windfall anyay. The GAO disagrees.

The GAO told Congressional investigators today that Pentagon officials “overstepped the latitude provided by competition laws” before the war by awarding oil-related work to Halliburton under a pre- existing global logistics contract (LOGCAP). …

Contracting experts say it is highly unusual for political appointees to be involved in the contracting process since contracts are normally awarded by career civil servants with expertise in government contracting. Involvement by Cheney’s chief of staff in the contracting process contradicts Cheney’s assertion that he had no role in awarding contracts to his former company. …

..oh, and several of your “civil servants taskmasters” don’t want Congress to ask any questions about the whole mess publicly…

Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) refused to allow five former Halliburton employees with additional evidence of waste, fraud and abuse to testify today. The former employees (as well as an employee of a Halliburton subcontractor) have brought serious charges of abuse by Halliburton subsidiary KBR to the attention of Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), including billing $45 per six pack of soda, the use of a five-star hotel in Kuwait, a $100 charge per bag of laundry, and the torching of brand new $80,000 trucks.

Can’t believe I almost let this one get by – today’s the centennial of the day immortalized in James Joyce’s Ulysses. One of my biggest failures in life is not to have finished the book. It’s an easy read on some levels – Joyce spins words that string together like footfalls on a summer’s eve – but following the stream of consciousness is draining. Morning Edition was on this like stink on poop.

I’ve tried pushing through on several occasions, and even took the book to war with me, where it (with my iPod) played a key role in keeping my sanity despite planes launching mere feet from my head. But somehow I haven’t been able to make it through. Perhaps in 2007, when June 16 is on a Saturday and the baby is three, I’ll sit down and push through the whole thing in one day. Much like I plan on hitting the Melville Marathon this year.

Call me Bill-iss-hmael.

It’s no secret that (personal acquaintances aside, and merely hypothetically) I wouldn’t save a lawer from drowning if it meant lifting my foot from his head. But the recent decisions of some doctors not to treat malpractice lawyers, their kin, or employees strikes me as, well, wrong.

Supporting tort reform and exposing the bar for the crassly partisan, progress impeding leech on society that it is is a fine and noble pursuit. But this crosses the line.

Sadr sends his ‘militia’ home. That seems positive. If he’ll face the murder charges against him, and he’s found not guilty – he can even run for office if he wants to. Of course, running for office requires more of a platform than “Death to America!”… at least, I hope it does!

I was just thinking that the porch was getting way too political – and I’m adding fuel… oops. Anyone see the Lakers get torched last night. That was awesome.
