Today’s reason: supporting offshore tax shelters.
This site and their article on Accenture’s selection for a large governemnt contract are vitriolic, but their logic is in the right place.
President Bush has said he wants to “make sure that the system is fair for those of us who do pay taxes” and that “we want everybody paying their fair share.” But … [a]ccording to news reports, the Bush administration yesterday gave a $10 billion contract for the Department of Homeland Security to Accenture (formerly Arthur Andersen), despite the company having recently moved its official headquarters to Bermuda to avoid U.S. taxes.
Accenture has a standard response for expressing denial at charges like this.
Accenture is a global organization with 75,000 people working in 47 countries around the world. Accenture has never been a U.S.-based or -operated organization and has never operated under a U.S. parent corporation.
This doesn’t address the fact that (a) Accenture was formed when executives from Arthur Anderson (which bit the dust in 2001 because they were complicit).htm] in the scandals that brought down Enron) decided to form an “international” corporation…for whatever reason. (I don’t want to spawn unneccesary conspiracy theories, but at this point these guys were experts on guv’ment troubles and had plenty of impetus to maximize their evasion effeciency.) (b) This administration handed a large contract to a company that makes a point of saying they have “never been a U.S.-based or -operated organization”.
(a post for my lovely wife)
Protestors are picketing the National Spelling Bee claiming that English spelling is illogical, and the national spelling bee only reinforces the crazy spellings that they say contribute to dyslexia, high illiteracy and harder lives for immigrants.
I’m on the side of the protestors, I think, but I figured it was time to start an argument that didn’t include the B or K words.
Polyphonic Spree gets into the interactive art scene with The Quest for the Rest in the vein of Samorost (and that other site I can never find.)
