I’m not one to usually endorse huge displays of patriotism; I’ve got too much respect for the flag to wrap myself in it on a regular basis, but can understand why some people would want to.

This goes way too far the other way:

Parents of pupils at Grange School in Stourbridge, West Midlands, were told their children could not wear anything with the England motif during a non-uniform day to mark the last day of term. …The decision followed attacks on the school by vandals spraying graffiti offensive to white people and the school did not want to heighten tensions.

I can understand the desire to lessen tensions, but IMO, things like this do the opposite, making people question their country and implicitly encouraging more racist graffiti, etc.

Ramp up US Oil production? To heck with that says William F. Buckley, Jr, founder of the National Review. The Saudis can out last us any day of the week.

Nope, says the blueblood sage. What we need to do is grab the only fuel that doesn’t contribute to global warming, and has a minimal footprint, unlike land-hungry technologies like solar and wind. Yep, WFB says the time to go nuclear

As y’all know, I’m all for this. Split them atoms, babies. Fuel? Bah – start building breeder reactors and pull out more fuel than you put in. Gotta love nuclear physics.

Store the excess capacity as hydrogen, and suddenly we have fuel with which to develop a new hydrogen economy, and develop effecient methods of distribution.

Plus, we’ll train a new generation of nuke physicists, who may be able to solve the challenges of fusion.

Then the only sound they will hear is our high pitched, squeaky voices as we sail for Cuba, where the weather is warm and so is the, ahem, companionship. … Sorry, I was channeling Marco Ramius there for a while.
