after 3/11’s attacks

Millions of Spaniards poured into the streets Friday, chanting “Cowards!” and “Assassins!” in a protest of the bombings that killed 199 people.

“We all need to be here to repudiate these killings. All of us. It is our duty,” said Manuel Velasco, a university professor who was drenched from the rain

The silence there was broken when someone angrily shouted: “Send the terrorists to the firing squad!”

ETA, the Basque terrorist group, is vigorously denying responsibility. My guess is they’re scared of a potential invasion of northern Spain by a coalition of the willing.

In any case, we’re all Spaniards today.

Dig

1997, “Now that [the Cold War] struggle is over, why is it that our vast intelligence apparatus continues to grow?”

September 1995, two years after the first World Trade Center attack, Senator Kerry proposed cutting $1.5 billion from the intelligence budget.

1994 Kerry twice pushed to cut $1 billion from the budgets of the National Foreign Intelligence Program and from Tactical Intelligence, and advocated freezing their budgets.

Kerry has voted against funding the MX missile, the Patriot missile, the Apache helicopter, the Blackhawk helicopter, the B-1 Bomber, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and just about every significant weapons system used in the war on terrorism,

Yep, he served in Vietnam, but I served in OIF, and I outrank Kerry. Does that give me more credibility on foreign policy than either he or GWB?

ROTFLMAO

Security people kept reporters from interviewing the workers at U.S.A. until the president was on the way to his next stop.

But when workers were finally interviewed — these people who made up the bulk of the president’s cheering audience in New York — Bush’s performance turned out to be, if anything, even more impressive.

“No speak English,” said the first worker, smiling apologetically.

“No speak English,” said the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth workers way-laid in the crowd.

But you think the tax cuts should be made permanent, as he says?

“Sorry, no English,” said another.

No, but Joss Whedon, who did the Buffy TV series and Firefly, which I seem to recall some folks here liked, is doing the comic for a while.

And it’s not people walking around claiming to be me:

You’ve all heard about the woman at Wal-Mart who tried to pass a fake million dollar bill?

One Million Dollar Bill

Well, how ‘bout the guy who successfully passed the following:

GWB $200 bill

As Democrats sharpen their attack sticks, we should probably see a daily news article from them explaining why we shouldn’t vote for Bush. I expect many of the stories to be repeats or to expound on previous day’s events, but I thought I’d help jank and reeder sharpen their defnsive tactics by offering up an article per weekday until we get around to election day. So, for 3/11/2004, here’s my “Anyone But Bush NOTD”.

The Bush nominee for the new assistant secretary of commerce for manufacturing and services is looking to get rejected since Kerry’s camp dropped a bombshell on the nomination news event.

Six months after promising to create an office to help the nation’s struggling manufacturers, President Bush settled on someone to head it, but the nomination was being reconsidered last night after Democrats revealed that his candidate had opened a factory in China.

…Kerry’s campaign, tipped off about the impending nomination several hours earlier, hastened to distribute news reports that Raimondo’s firm, Behlen Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Neb., had laid off 75 U.S. workers in 2002, four months after announcing plans for a $3 million factory in northwest Beijing.

Orange County California: In the primary elections more votes were registered than there were registered voters in the precinct.

The good news? There’s not a darn thing that can be done about it, since there’s no paper trail.

“The principal of democracy is every vote should count. That’s why we need a better election system,” said Henry Brady, a political science professor at UC Berkeley and an expert on voting systems. And apparently some votes are so nice, they get to be counted twice.

It also looks like the problems with Heart InterCivic’s voting machines unfairly targeted voters in Republician precincts. Getting the wrong ballot was a frustrating experience for Shirley Green, an Anaheim Republican who said a ballot for the wrong precinct appeared on her voting machine.

For those who still haven’t done their taxes this year, here’s a bit of encouragement from Warren Buffet’s 2003 letter to Berkshire Hathaway stockholders.

Our federal tax return for 2002 (2003 is not finalized), when we paid $1.75 billion, covered a mere 8,905 pages. As is required, we dutifully filed two copies of this return, creating a pile of paper seven feet tall.

He says 2003’s taxes will total $3.3B, by the way, which is 2.5% of the total income tax paid by all U.S. corporations.
