I have been trying to overcome a sense of dread for Alabamans since I heard the news that they “rejected the proposed tax hike”:http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&e=6&u=/ap/alabama_taxes that Governer Bob Riley proposed. I know that just a few years ago “Alabama universities were on their way up”:http://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/stories/2001/04/09/story7.html, but they do rank 6th for “people 25 years and older with less then a high school diploma”:http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Ranking/2002/R05T040.htm .

bq. ??State schools Superintendent Ed Richardson said Tuesday night that the results could mean cuts in everything from textbooks to football for Alabama schools. ‘We’re looking at possibly a four-day school week and at charging fees for everything that’s not required for graduation,’ Richardson said. He said that would include charging a fee for students to play football or to play in the band.??

Without a decent football program, graduation rates are sure to drop even more! Maybe they can find someone to “pay the players”:http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2002/02/02/spt_alabama_hit_with.html football fees?
