Ah, the wonders of open source. There’s no driver to print from my iBook to our printer running on a Win2K machine. The printer pre-dated my desire to switch (Janie Porsche – Trinity Alum), which is why I didn’t get a compatible.
Regardless, I’ve been messing around with Yellow Dog on the iBook, and am growing to like it. Ximian Evolution completely rocks, beats the snot out of Outlook. Tonight, I decided I needed to see if I could print. Five minutes later, I’m printing. It rocks.
I may have to switch once more…
This cool little website takes your salary as an input and spits out (1) your percentile in the richest people of the world, (2) how many people are poorer than you, and (3) your number ranking as the richest person in the world.
It’s a both a little guilt and pride to know that I’m in the top 1%, but I’d be interested to see this applied to just America.
Apparently Salon.com has returned from Labor Day vacation (after using Tuesday as a recovery day) with a liberal vengence. Tom DeLay breaks state laws using coporate donations, DeLay and Rove are working to destroy the Hispanic vote (talk about sticking your finger in a crumbling dyke), Bush believed Iraqi exiles more than intelligence experts in every branch of the U.S. government and Keith “my favorite political cartoonist” Knight takes a broad swipe, too.
It just doesn’t seem fair.
Another sign of declining education in the USA is that the above pic of the King of Rock and/or Roll (not to be confused with the Kings of Rock” or the Trash Rock Kings or Any of these Elvii or the somewhat amoral immortals in the sure to be winter blockbuster which shouldn’t be confused with the return of another king [Arthur as the Antichrist? Go figure]) was created by computer scientists in Scotland instead of the US. What the heck are we teaching these kids?
BTW- I’m nominating this entry for among the best collections of semi-random stream of consciousness links of the week.
All the texas stations and papers have talked about the new Texas traffic laws which went into effect on Monday including a new points system which could cause hefty surcharges for problem drivers.
I particularly find this law interesting:
SB 193 requires drivers nearing a stopped emergency vehicle that has lights activated, unless otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, to vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, if the highway has two or more lanes traveling the direction of the emergency vehicle; or slow to a speed not more than 20 mph less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 mph or more; or slow to a speed not more than 5 mph when the posted speed limit is less than 25 mph. A violation is a punishable by a maximum fine of $200.
Appropos of today’s Salon coverage of DeLay’s power grab, my sister sent me the above image as an email attachment. Sometimes things just come together….
First: When I start drinking again (Gonna try to give it up while Missy’s pregnant, kind of as a support group, though I’m hesitant to pass up a few months of no arguments about who’s the designated driver), I’m starting with Old Whiskey River. Proving that marketing has entirely taken over our lives, each bottle is packaged with a Willie Nelson CD; all that’s left is to get drunk and start breaking glasses on the floor!
Second: I’ve decided I’m completely sold on the digital house/digital hub etc idea. This is a certain amount of preaching to the choir, but this is going to break fast.
Read more!John Derbyshire over at National Review threw up a spoof on Chaucer this morning. I wanted to link to it, and include “lifestyl sodomityckal” in a post for Google’s crawlers to find. I figured that someone would try to googlewhack the combination, and wanted to stop them dead. HA!
Anyone else got some anti-googlewhacks they want to post?
Early Voting has begun in Texas for the September 13 constitutional election. Texans need no excuse to vote early. Harris County polling places are open, as are Travis County polls. If you’re in a different county, I hit on the elections pages for both Harris and Travis County by Googling “early voting Texas (name of county) county”.
If you’re not registered to vote, shame on you. The Texas Secretary of State’s got a list of all the county voter registration clerks, and a request form for the voter registration form.
If you’re not a Texan … Well, shame on you too.
