Jim McManus writes about the “World Series of Poker”: for “Harper’s Magazine”: and decides he can tell the story best if he actually competes — and he makes it to the final round!

It’s nice to have vacation time to sit and read.

Vacation? Vacation? What’s that?

I’m planning a little vacation of sorts, myself. After I complete reading the original “The Prince”, I’m hitting nothing but fiction for a couple of books. It’ll kill me to do it, but I’m even going to put off Inventing Modern by my current hero, Dr. John Leinhard. My mind is too saturated with fact, despite my efforts to chase it away with repeated readings of Bread and Jam for Francis with the kid. I keep interjecting “If she wants to eat bread and jam it’s her right, and there’s no fault at all lying with Smuckers and WonderBread for making their food too delicious! Stupid lawyers.”

Somehow, Jake manages to turn a somersault, push his train around the track, and make everything all right again.
