Another example of a “cool idea”: that could have sprouted on the Backporch but would have nver materialized. If I lived in New York would I be able to find a group of people for performance art peices like this?

This is awesome! And another contribution for Kelly’s WDILINYC?

You’re right — we’re clever and could totally do this. Now, why are we so lazy?

The quick and easy answer is too much malted barley, water, and hops.

This, honestly, may be the best justification for setting the drinking age at 21 that I’ve ever seen. Let’s face it – the easy access to booze that we grew up with (especially in Louisiana, but even in Texas until the late 90’s) tended to stifle creativity. Why actually create a giant Rubik’s Cube when you could sit on Trey’s back porch, drink the better part of a 12 pack, ponder how cool it would be to make an 8′ x 8′ x 8′ Rubik’s Cube, and still go make out with the 16 year old you’d just met? Actually doing crap like that takes work. Talking smack works just as well with repressed Southern Baptist and Catholic chicks.

The other reason is that unlike urban cops, the cops we grew up with would have arrested, beaten, and thrown us in jail for pulling stuff like that. And there were enough stories floating around about how easy it was to get a ticket to ride in the Angola Prison Rodeo that we didn’t want to run afoul of the cops, on the off chance that someone would plant a couple of pounds of heroin or hashish during the booking.
