A weekly column at “Salon.com”:http://www.salon.com that has really caught my fancy, “Match Made In Heaven, Match Made In Hell”:http://dir.salon.com/topics/match_made_in_heaven_match_made_in_hell/, features the “real”-life stories of dating, some horrific, some transcendent. Generally, all of the stories include a hook one way or other that reveals the human component in the cold non-human world of online (or newspaper personals) dating. The reason I am more drawn to this column than Becky’s favorite, “Cary Tennis’ Since You Asked”:http://www.salon.com/directory/topics/since_you_asked/index.html, is these letters show the expansive variety of humanity and a good balance of people who find discomfort and love.

bq. From 7/23/2003 ??So there I was a few weeks later, naked but for a pareo strategically tucked to ward off overly prying fingers??

bq. From 7/16/2003 ??Suddenly a stray cat leapt out of the brush and attacked the cameraman — he jumped back and got tangled in the vines behind him, nearly dropping the camera. I helped him up and explained, “The cats are a bit feral.” He looked up and pointed the camera at me. I realized that I was on a blind date with television, and that it was going very badly… I grinned at the camera, and pictured thousands of single women in New York flipping the channel back to “Sex and the City” all at once.??

bq. From 6/25/2003 ??He was just leaving as I drove past the door to the restaurant and waved half-heartedly. I resisted the urge to flip him the bird.??

…and none of them are so disturbing as Anjelica’s 6/26/2002 submission to “Still Drunk”:http://www.shortandhappy.com/drunk/ at “A Short And Happy Life”:http://www.shortandhappy.com — don’t follow that link unless you can handle TRULY DISTURBING prose. If you can handle, click through the archive. Some of the other stories are fascinating.

Yeah, like Jamie the same day as Anjelica – ‘Who wants to get hit in the face with a plastic penis? Jay had won’ I was LMAO.
