Of the many things jank and I agree on, our desire to save the environment is one. We both dream of driving LEV of some type and the new Escape Hybrid is shaping up to be pretty sweet. As both a SULEV and PZEV (see below or follow the link) this is the car for me. Seeing this page I am committing myself to holding onto my 2000 RAV4 until this becomes available.

SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle)—A California standard that establishes even more stringent emissions standards than the Federal Tier 1 standards. To achieve the SULEV standard, vehicle emissions must be reduced by 76 to 97 percent from current levels. In fact, the SULEV standard allows only 10 pounds of smog-forming emissions per 150,000 miles! That makes SULEV-rated vehicles, including the Escape Hybrid, 90% cleaner than the Federal average.

PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle)—A California standard that measures total emissions from the vehicle and exceeds the SULEV standard. To get PZEV-certified, a vehicle must meet three criteria:

  • Its tailpipe emissions must meet SULEV standards.
  • It must demonstrate zero gasoline evaporative emissions, virtually eliminating evaporative emissions from the vehicle’s fuel system.
  • It must provide warranty coverage to ensure that the vehicle will meet PZEV requirements for an extended lifetime of 15 years or 150,000 miles.

An upcoming Game Boy Advance game, Boktai, requires you to sneak around dungeons and kill vampires using a sun-powered gun.

But in order to charge up the gun, you must actually expose the solar-cell-equipped game cartridge to sunlight.

I suspect this slogan will make an appearance on a sign at the next Democratic National Convention. Coming soon to bumpers and lapel pins near you…

I’m not quite sure how to take this bit of grotesqueness.

We used to be told that the US government wasn’t about murdering people. It had something to do with justice or maintaining the moral high ground or something. Ford issued a presidential order.

I have been following the story of the Mob Project in several blogs around the web (including one of my current favorites, Lindsayism) and now Salon has an article on it. “Hundreds of people are gathering at random Manhattan locations for 10 minutes and doing … well, nothing. Is it performance art or just a bunch of hipsters with too much time on their hands?“ I consider it performance Art (note the capital A) and I wish I had thought of it. It’s not just pure genius, it made it past the “sitting-on-the-backporch-drinking-beer” premise to actual execution — repeatedly.

I wanted to get input from our resident military man (and anyone out there who has served) on this letter in Salon. Look more than half-way down the letters list for “[Read “Saving Pvt. Lynch: The Made-for-TV Movie,” by Barry Lando.]“. The writer of this letter posits that “…Jessica Lynch rightly received two other medals — the Purple Heart and a POW medal — and she should wear them proudly. But she should also return the Bronze Star as a personal statement of integrity…”

It’s a brave position to put out there. (One that Salon is kind-of brave to publish, I think.) Do you think they’re right, jank?
